Shelter 611 and the Utrecht Landscape
Walking or cycling on a former runway. Along hidden bunkers, former ammunition storage, and immense shelters, but surrounded by greenery. This is only possible at Park Vliegbasis Soesterberg. This former (military) airbase opened its gates to the public in 2014 after 100 years of seclusion. Since 2017, it has become the largest nature reserve of Utrechts Landschap.
Clear Path for the Skylark
In the sparse grassland along the runway, over 200 pairs of the protected skylark breed. The breeding area is closed to the public between March 15 and August 15.
That way, the skylark has all the space to flirt, nest, and raise up to three broods. This is possible because the young birds are fledged in about 18 days.
Around mid-August, the feeding of the last young ones stops, and the birds head south.
Aside from sparse grassland, Soesterberg consists of a mosaic of well-developed forests and heath. The forest is a home to woodcocks, hawks, buzzards, and rare mushrooms. The sand lizard and viviparous lizard also occur on the former airbase, and deer, badgers, polecats, and pine martens inhabit the area.
Explosive Area...
The area is a treasure trove of nature and military heritage. An extensive landscape, full of stories and tangible memories of the Cold War. Here, brave pioneers conducted flight experiments in the early days of Dutch Aviation, and it is the birthplace of the Royal Air Force. The explicit warning to stay on roads and paths is not without reason: unexploded ordnance is present.
Shelter 611 is one of the many shelters that have been given a new purpose. As the headquarters of the Utrecht Landscape, as a studio space for artists, as a venue for parties
and corporate events.
Park Vliegbasis Soesterberg is accessible on foot or by bike. There is a unique route along signs with QR codes that provide access to interesting background information. Part of the park is Landgoed De Paltz, with beech avenues, visual axes, water features, and more classics from 19th-century landscape architecture.
