Nail mat versus acupuncture

Is a nail mat really as good for you as claimed, wondered the consumer program Radar. And because nail mats are indeed associated with acupuncture, they turned to the NVA with that question.
Doctor-acupuncturist Koos van  Kooten, board member of the NVA, participated in an interview. What is true about the health claims?

Acupuncture specific and personal
'To equate the nail mat with acupuncture is a bit simplistic. Acupuncture is more complex and much more specific,' explains Van Kooten to Radar. He explains that an acupuncture treatment is a very personal treatment, where one's personal experience is taken into account, and a specific method and duration of treatment are chosen accordingly. During this process, specific points on the body are treated, whereas with a nail mat, you lie on a bed of needles with your entire back.

'If you have more serious conditions, chronic fatigue, or prolonged inflammations, then go to an acupuncturist or other healthcare professional to discover how to best address your personal complaints.' advises Van Kooten. 'A nail mat is not a substitute for that.'

Relax
A nail mat can possibly provide general relaxation by the pressure on the skin and also on the tissue underneath. This stimulates the body to release tension. 'It also helps that the user of the mat is forced to lie flat on his or her back for half an hour, which can be pleasant anyway if you have a busy life.' Van Kooten states matter-of-factly.

The claims made about the functioning of the nail mat will mainly be based on personal experiences and are shared by providers of nail mats, who have an interest in selling them.

Make an appointment!
