Nail mat versus acupuncture
Posted on 04/08/2022 in Current Affairs
Is a nail mat really as good for you as claimed, wondered the consumer program Radar. And because nail mats are associated with acupuncture, they turned to the NVA with that question.
Physician-acupuncturist Koos van Kooten, a board member of the NVA, participated in an interview. What is true about the health claims?
Acupuncture: Specific and Personal
'It's a bit simplistic to lump the nail mat and acupuncture together. Acupuncture is more complex and much more specific,' explains Van Kooten to Radar. He elaborates that an acupuncture treatment is a very personal process, where one's individual experience is taken into account, and a specific method and duration of treatment are then chosen accordingly. During this process, specific points on the body are treated, unlike lying on a bed of needles with a nail mat covering your entire back.
'If you have more serious conditions, chronic fatigue, or prolonged inflammation, it's best to see an acupuncturist or other healthcare professional to determine the most effective way to address your personal issues,' advises Van Kooten. 'A nail mat is not a substitute for that.'
Relaxing
A nail mat may possibly provide general relaxation by applying pressure on the skin and the tissue underneath. This stimulates the body to release tension. 'It also helps that the user of the mat is forced to lie flat on their back for half an hour, which can be pleasant in itself, especially if you have a busy life,' Van Kooten soberly states.
The claims made about the effectiveness of the nail mat are likely based on personal experiences and are shared by providers of nail mats who have an interest in selling them.
