Women are different from men

That's not news, you might think. Yet it is the outcome of a large and unique international study led by the University Medical Center Groningen, which was published today in the prestigious scientific journal The Lancet. It concerns the difference in response to medications between men and women.

White Men Guidelines
In that study, the influence of gender differences in the use of medications for heart failure was examined. Guidelines for medication application are based on large studies, in which mainly white men participated. However, women's metabolism works differently, and they are generally smaller and lighter. Women often appear to need only half of the medication. The prescribed (male) dose mainly causes many side effects.

Female Attention
Bernadet Santema, the lead author of the study in The Lancet, says that among doctors there is gradually more awareness of the role of gender differences in the treatment of various conditions, but that much still needs to change. The increasing number of female medical students and physician-researchers will help, but it is a gradual process.

Acupuncture for Men/Women - centuries of personalized medicine
At the National Public Health Day at the VU Medical Center, the NVA published an informative brochure on the same subject in 2016. For an acupuncturist, it is normal to look at the differences between people and man or woman. Attention to lifestyle, nutrition, and mental well-being is a fixed part of our daily practice.
