World Food Day and Farmers' Protest

Posted on 17/10/2019 in Current Affairs

By coincidence or not, on the day that angry farmers disrupted Dutch roads for the second time with their tractors, on October 16, it was World Food Day. Globally, 820 million people consistently lack enough food, which is about one in nine.

The Dutch farmers need to reduce their production to decrease nitrogen emissions. That is the other side of the coin. And a lot of animal feed is being grown, while people are suffering from hunger. This also puts a strain on the land and water. An incredibly complex problem, involving many more parties than the local farmer, who works with heart and soul on his farm, often for a pittance.

Healthy, Nutritious, and Sustainable
Food security is no longer just a matter of quantity, but also of quality. Unhealthy dietary patterns are one of the leading causes of illness and death worldwide. The coalition of 192 countries committed to the Sustainable Development Goals aims to make healthy, nutritious, and sustainable food accessible to everyone. The goal is to eradicate hunger by 2030.

Eating Seasonally
On WorldFoodDay.com, you will find 'Tips for Home: Less Waste' and 'Tips for Home: More Local and Seasonal'. Therapists in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) will certainly agree with the latter tips. Eating seasonally and considering your energy and that of the food has always been an important principle. It helps keep yourself vital and healthy. Here, on this website, you will find information on nutrition, herbs, flavors, all from the perspective of TCM.

World Food Day advocates for a fair price for the producers of our food, both in developing countries and close to home. And so we are back to our own farmers. In short, everything is interconnected, balance is needed, an interaction, a cycle of energy. And you can also read about this on this site, under Yin and Yang and under Five Elements. TCM is right on trend, we must acknowledge!
