Acupuncture in the Margriet
08/02/2019
In an interview in the Margriet of week 6, acupuncturist Jan Joost Kolsteeg clearly explains what Traditional Chinese Medicine actually is. It is much more than just the needles that play a key role in acupuncture.
The Chinese medicine assumes that physical complaints arise when energy cannot flow freely through our body. This can be due to a deficiency or excess of energy somewhere, or because the energy is blocked. The acupuncturist looks at various symptoms and tries to determine the origin of the complaints.
There are a number of strategies to restore the energy system: acupuncture, moxibustion (an herb with a warming effect), cupping, nutrition, herbs, and exercise. In common parlance, all of this falls under the umbrella of acupuncture, says Jan Joost. The acupuncturist looks at what someone needs at a particular moment. And provides tips to reduce the influences contributing to the complaint in daily life. You could say it's ancient lifestyle coaching!
