Information for your general practitioner

The general practitioner is the linchpin in healthcare. That's usually who you turn to first with health questions. That doesn't mean you expect a solution from him/her. Sometimes you just want to exchange thoughts and already have a 'health route' in mind.

Reference during lockdown
During the lockdown, patients frequently requested a referral for acupuncture from their GPs, as that was the only way to be treated 'alternatively'. This was met with different responses for various reasons, as we heard from NVA acupuncturists and their patients at that time.

Unknown, Unloved?
Fortunately, more and more general practitioners and specialists are recognizing the benefits of acupuncture and other complementary treatments. It is known that information about the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture helps with its acceptance in mainstream healthcare. That's why, specifically for your general practitioner, you can find information at the Dutch Knowledge Centre Acupuncture on this website.

Ambassadors Wanted!
Over the coming months, the NVA will be alerting general practitioners through targeted advertisements on social media (as shown above) about acupuncture for low back pain and migraines. These are two compelling examples where acupuncture is effective and can help prevent the use of heavy painkillers.
