Nothing to complain about and acupuncture
Posted on 08-08-2019 in Current Affairs
Never before have so many people reached such high ages. These elderly people are very different from before, and that is quite reassuring.
Ever struggled to remember a name or forgotten what you wanted to say? Not to worry, one in five 60-year-olds experiences forgetfulness. Emeritus professor Dorly Deeg discusses the Lasa study by the Amsterdam UMC and VU in the capital in the Volkskrant*. For over 25 years, a large group of elderly people has been tested and interviewed every three years. She compiled the insights from this study in her book Years Gained.
Nothing to Complain About
Elderly people today move less than their own parents, are more likely to be overweight, and drink more alcohol. We live longer thanks to medical science, but as a result, we also deal with limitations for a longer period. Nevertheless, elderly people rate their health positively until a high age. The idea seems to be 'Compared to others, I have nothing to complain about.' Elderly people have more friends, which helps them stay active. Social contacts also provide a sense of security. Men are living longer, there are fewer widows, and people are growing old together. This means less loneliness.
Dementia Anxiety
‘There is a huge dementia anxiety,’ says Dorly Deeg, ‘but compared to our parents, we are cognitively much healthier.’ The current generation of elderly people has built up a greater brain reserve due to higher levels of education, challenging jobs, and more exercise. We also need that; technological developments are placing greater demands on our brain.
Tips
Although her book is not a self-help book for seniors, she can reveal a few tips: maintain friendships and stay active and engaged, ensure adequate physical activity, set achievable goals to maintain control over your life. And always keep learning!
