Vague health complaints have disappeared: Corine shares her experience with acupuncture
'Acupuncture and Western medicine can work very well together. They do not hinder each other, but can strengthen each other.'
For the Acupuncture Week, we spoke with Corine (42), a client at the practice of acupuncturist Anneke van Beers. With a busy job and a family, acupuncture has become an important part for her to maintain balance.
What has surprised you most since you started acupuncture?
Corine: 'Vague health complaints have disappeared and stay away as long as I continue the treatments. I feel more balanced both physically and mentally, I am less susceptible to viruses and inflammation, and I experience a greater sense of calm.;
How would you explain acupuncture to someone who has never heard of it?
'Very small needles are used—you hardly feel them—on areas such as the legs, feet, hands, arms, or face. These points are connected to specific bodily functions and help the body restore itself. Acupuncture addresses complaints at their source and stimulates the body’s natural self-healing ability. It is an ancient Chinese medical practice that has existed for over 4,000 years. If it didn’t work, it would have disappeared long ago.'
Have the treatments changed the way you view your own health or lifestyle?
'Yes, I’ve become much more aware of what I can do myself. And when I need support, acupuncture can help. The communication between acupuncturist and client is very important in this process.'
Have there been moments when you thought: this is why I keep coming?
'Not one specific moment, but I notice it immediately when too much time passes between treatments. For example, my immunity may drop or I may experience fluid retention in my legs. That tells me it’s time for another session. I now plan my appointments strategically, for example around exams. That helps me stay calm and perform better.'
What would you like more people to know about acupuncture or your experience with it?
'That acupuncture works very well alongside Western medicine. They don’t conflict; on the contrary, they can reinforce each other. Acupuncture not only helps with physical complaints but can also support issues such as exam anxiety or hormonal imbalances.'
More stories during Acupuncture Awareness Week
This interview is part of Acupuncture Awareness Week, which this year focuses on burnout. During this week, we share conversations with acupuncturists and clients about how they view recovery from both physical and mental exhaustion from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Read the other interviews and be inspired by stories of recovery and balance from acupuncturists and their clients.
