National Heart Failure Week – Your heart whispers before it screams
From April 20 to April 26, 2026, it is National Heart Failure Week. An important moment to reflect on a condition that is often only recognized when symptoms are already clearly present.
When thinking of heart failure, many people envision something sudden and serious. In reality, it often begins much more subtly. The body sends out signals, but these are not always immediately recognized.
The signals are often there earlier
Heart failure usually does not develop overnight. It is often a process that unfolds slowly. Symptoms that may occur include persistent fatigue, shortness of breath with light exertion, fluid retention in the legs, and restless sleep or waking up more frequently.
Because these symptoms develop gradually, they are not always directly associated with the heart. That is why it is important to remain alert to changes in the body.
In women, it often looks different
Less known is that heart symptoms in women often manifest differently than in men. While men more frequently display the well-known, classic symptoms, the signals in women can sometimes be subtler and less clearly identifiable.
Consider, for example, prolonged fatigue, a feeling of restlessness or tension, sleep problems, or vague shortness of breath. As a result, symptoms may sometimes be recognized later or taken less seriously. This makes it all the more important to listen carefully to what the body is indicating.
Listening to your body
Within traditional Chinese medicine, we do not only look at the heart as an organ but at the body as a whole. How does energy flow through the body? How is fluid processed? And how well is the body able to find rest and recovery?
When that balance is disturbed, small signals often emerge first.
Not an alarm bell, but a whisper. That is precisely where the opportunity lies to intervene earlier.
What can you do yourself?
In those early signals lies the space to make a change. Think of ensuring adequate rest and recovery moments, maintaining a regular day and night rhythm, consuming food that provides energy without burdening the body, and taking symptoms seriously instead of brushing them off.
It sounds simple, but it is not always easy. Yet, these steps can make a significant difference.
Support from acupuncture
Acupuncture can be a valuable support for symptoms that fit within this framework. The treatment focuses on restoring balance in the body, allowing processes such as energy distribution and fluid regulation to function better.
Many people experience increased energy, better sleep, and more calmness in their bodies.
Small signals, great importance
Heart failure rarely comes out of nowhere. The body often sends signals earlier. The question is: are you listening to them?
National Heart Failure Week is a great time to consciously reflect on this. For symptoms indicating heart problems, it is always important to contact a doctor.
