Oncology and acupuncture in the spotlight
The effectiveness of acupuncture in cancer is gaining more and more recognition, both among the public and among doctors and other healthcare workers. That is great news, especially for people facing cancer.
The afternoon after the General Assembly of the NVA on April 15th was filled with presentations on this topic. First, Dr. Ines von Rosenstiel-Jadoul, pediatrician and Integrative Medicine physician at Rijnstate hospital, provided us with insight into the development of integrative medicine. Making complementary care discussable in the regular consultation room is important for the well-being of oncology patients. After all, not only the 'regular' treatment matters, but also what the patient does and could do to promote their recovery and well-being. Additionally, it is good to know that certain herbs or orthomolecular agents can counteract chemotherapy.
Referral Guide Cancer IKNL
After drs. Ines von Rosenstiel, presentations were given by four enthusiastic NVA colleagues, who shared their experience in the field of acupuncture in cancer with their colleagues. The listing of acupuncturists in the Referral Guide Cancer of the IKNL is an important step to reach as many people with or after cancer as possible. The NVA plays a role in the contacts with the IKNL and wants to be able to register more of its members for the Referral Guide through education and support. This afternoon was a nice starting point for that.
Quality of life
As an acupuncturist, we play a 'modest' role in the treatment process of people with or after cancer. Acupuncture is not used to cure cancer, but it does have a positive effect on the quality of life during and after conventional treatment. For example, in cases of pain,
neuropathy, nausea, sleep problems, hot flashes, anxiety, loss of concentration, and fatigue, to name a few 'additional' symptoms of the necessary oncological treatments.
