Increase in use of heavy painkillers

Posted on 09/06/2022 in Current Affairs

In 2020 and 2021, the use of heavy and addictive painkillers has increased again, after a decline in 2019. This was reported by the AD today based on figures from the database for the use of medicines and medical aids of the National Health Care Institute in the Netherlands. More people used oxycodone and fentanyl, painkillers that have an addictive effect after just one week, making it difficult to stop.

Bridge to surgery
Anesthesiologists believe that the increasing use of opioids is related to the long waiting lists. Using opioids for acute pain after surgery is not a problem, but long-term use, for example as a bridge to surgery, is not advisable. Loneliness due to the COVID-19 pandemic may have also played a role; pain medication intended for temporary relief can also dull the sharp edges of emotional pain, making it tempting to continue taking it.

Acupuncture as a good alternative
Research in the United States has shown that acupuncture is a good alternative for (severe) pain. The opioid epidemic in the US, including among veterans, is being addressed with acupuncture. More information below.
