Allergic rhinitis and acupuncture

13-05-2023

A total of 29 studies on the effect of acupuncture in allergic rhinitis have been scrutinized in an EBA-summary (EBA: Evidence Based Acupuncture). The translation of this summary can be found on the Dutch Acupuncture Knowledge Center.

Allergic rhinitis, what is that?
This medical term is better known as hay fever and allergy to animal hair and dander and dust mites. According to the most recent evidence, acupuncture is an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis. Studies also seem to indicate that acupuncture is safer than the currently commonly used medication and may also be more cost-effective. Just this week, the media reported that grasses are blooming abundantly and hay fever is literally and figuratively in the air for many people.

Allergic rhinitis common condition
Worldwide, about 10 to 30% of the population experience symptoms of allergic rhinitis and in some countries, the prevalence is even 54%. Allergic rhinitis occurs in all age groups but most commonly in children. It affects men and women equally. Allergic rhinitis can occur both seasonally and throughout the year.
Typical seasonal triggers are pollen. Persistent symptoms are often caused by pet hair and dander as well as dust mites.
