How can I boost my immune system?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), staying healthy is paramount. That's why a lot of emphasis is placed on lifestyle: nutrition, exercise, sleep, relaxation, and living in harmony with the seasons. The idea is simple: when your body is in balance, it can better cope with changing circumstances, such as cold, stress, busyness, or a period when many people around you are sick.
Even in this day and age, TCM advice and treatments can complement your immunity and promote recovery.
Food (TCM tip: warm, light, and supportive)
According to TCM, you can best support your immune system with lightly warming food, especially in colder seasons or if you notice you get colds easily.
These foods are traditionally seen as supportive:
- Radish or turnip, lightly warmed (about 3 minutes in hot water)
- Onion and leek
- Cabbage varieties, briefly cooked
- Spicy herbs like ginger and pepper (in moderation)
- Warm lemon drink: fresh lemon juice with boiling water, optionally with honey
Practical tip:
choose soups, broths, and warm meals more often and drink enough (preferably warm) throughout the day.
Acupressure
In addition to getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and exercising, acupressure can be a great way to support your body. You can easily do this yourself by massaging specific points regularly.
How do you do that?
- Massage the point with firm but comfortable pressure
- 30–60 seconds per point
- Repeat 1–2 times a day, for example in the morning and before bedtime.
The following points can be massaged to improve resistance: the area between the metatarsals of the little and second smallest toe.
The point in the middle of the ball of the foot. And the inside of the ankle (the soft area between the Achilles tendon and the ankle)
