From Summer to Autumn: Moving from Earth to Metal
Third part of our series on the Earth element and the transition to autumn
After focusing on nutrition and rest, movement is an important way to support the Earth element during the late summer and the transition to autumn. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, movement is not only seen as a way to strengthen muscles and joints but also as a means to nourish digestion and mental balance. Because the Earth element is associated with stability and centering, exercises that cultivate these qualities are especially suitable for this season.
Gentle, centering movement
Soft, flowing movements strengthen Earth energy most effectively. A calm walk in the morning or after a meal keeps the body supple, supports digestion, and brings calm to the mind. In TCM, it is emphasized that the spleen not only processes food but also provides the “nourishment of the mind.” Excessive mental rumination can deplete this energy, just as a heavy meal can strain digestion. By moving mindfully – for example, with gentle bends, torso rotations, or subtle rocking of the pelvis – you allow energy to flow through the body while maintaining mental balance.
Meridians and acupuncture points for balance
The spleen and stomach meridians run through the middle and front of the body. Smooth, rhythmic movements stimulate the energy flow along these lines. Also, light pressure on specific points, such as Stomach 36 (Zusanli) below the knee
or Spleen 6 (Sanyinjiao) on the inside of the lower leg, can support earth energy and provide a subtle sense of balance.
Standing firmly in autumn
A key aspect of the Earth element is grounding. By consciously feeling the support of your feet and slowly shifting your weight from heels to toes, you strengthen your stability. This simple interplay of rhythm and gravity activates the center of the body and gives a strong sense of rootedness – exactly what the autumn season calls for.
From stability to letting go
The centering movements of the Earth element in late summer gradually prepare us for the energy of the Metal element. While the Earth element helps us stand firm and maintain balance, autumn invites us to release tension and unnecessary thoughts. Rhythmic movement combined with a calm breath makes it easier to let go of mental clutter, allowing body and mind to relax and create space for reflection. In this way, movement forms a natural bridge to the phase of the season where introspection and clearing out are central.
