Week van de acupunctuur
11 t/m 15 november 2024Wonderful experiences - fam. Hofman
My family and I have long been familiar with the healing power of acupuncture. Doctor Lin's treatments helped me with stress, menopausal symptoms, digestive issues, and eczema. However, my father's story is quite different, and because we are so grateful for the effects of acupuncture treatments, we are happy to share this experience.
Fluid in the Lungs
In the summer of 2023, my father began experiencing increasing shortness of breath. After a visit to the emergency room and a blood test, it was determined that he had 'fluid in the lungs.' Later that day, two liters of fluid were drained and examined. Unfortunately, the results were inconclusive, so the same procedure was repeated a week later, draining another two liters. Even then, no definitive diagnosis was made, so my father was advised to undergo a lung biopsy, which could only be done if he was hospitalized. However, due to the vacation of the relevant doctor, he had to wait three weeks for this.
During this time, his condition deteriorated significantly. He lost weight, had no appetite, experienced increased shortness of breath, and had difficulty moving. While awaiting the follow-up appointment, two more rounds of two-liter fluid drainage were performed.
The Diagnosis
In mid-August, the biopsy was finally taken. The lung was completely drained, and a drain was inserted. After a two-week hospital stay, the drain was removed. In total, 16 liters of fluid were drained. My father was discharged from the hospital with instructions to return if he experienced renewed shortness of breath. It was expected that the lung would fill with fluid again, and a "mobile drain" would be inserted to allow him to stay at home. The diagnosis? Pleural mesothelioma or asbestos-related cancer. Given my father's condition, a non-treatment, non-ventilation, and non-resuscitation policy was issued. It was expected that after the mobile drain was inserted, he would have a life expectancy of 2 weeks to several months.
Acupuncture and Herbs
With this heartbreaking, incomprehensible information, we returned home. Until the summer of 2023, my father had been a fit, sporty, and lively man. After the lung drainage, he felt relatively well.
To make this final phase as bearable as possible and maintain his quality of life, I contacted Doctor Lin and asked if he could help my father. Dr. Lin developed a treatment plan and visited my father multiple times at home for acupuncture and herbal treatments. He explained that he opened my father's prostate. This allowed the fluid to be drained and his digestion to improve. In addition to his expertise in acupuncture, he also applied his knowledge in oncology.
We quickly noticed that my father initially felt more stable and better. His appetite returned over time, as did his motivation and desire to move. His weight stabilized, but most importantly, the fluid accumulation in the lungs stopped.
Grateful
During a check-up at the MUMC in October, the X-ray showed that there was little to no fluid left in the lungs. This image confirms our experience and, above all, my father's feeling that he is doing well. He is no longer short of breath, has energy, appetite, and is back to living life. We are incredibly grateful for this and are convinced that Dr. Lin's treatments played a significant role in this. Recently, we celebrated my father's 79th birthday, something that seemed almost impossible in the summer. We cherish every day together and have confidence in the future for this moment.
In the Western academic medical world, there seems to be little room and attention for this method of treatment. This feels like a missed opportunity for many people. How wonderful would it be if other patients were also aware of this knowledge and expertise. We hope to contribute to that awareness by sharing my father's story!
