Een kwestie van beweging
Week van de acupunctuur
11 t/m 15 november 2024Interview with Diana about shoulder complaint
'At the moment I am walking a lot with my dog and I am walking around waving again!'
How long had you been suffering from your shoulder before you tried acupuncture?
Half a year.
And had you already tried other treatments or therapies before that?
Physiotherapy. But that didn't help much yet, because I have a frozen shoulder. And besides, it takes a very long time to get through that initial phase.
What was the decisive reason you decided to try acupuncture?
So my shoulder was still really tight and my other shoulder started to hurt a lot, so at some point I called my old physio. She had stopped by then, but she advised me to try acupuncture. My sister had already mentioned it. I hadn't thought of it myself, but when two people recommended it...
Can you describe how your first experience was with acupuncture?
Well, fine, I immediately felt at ease. Esther was very friendly and I just surrendered. I thought: it can't get any worse. Because my second shoulder was really painful by now. So there was really some urgency. Two shoulders, one of which was in the frozen phase, really terrible. I noticed right after the first time that something was changing. So I was actually very happy. The little pain I still had in the head of my left shoulder was practically gone after the first treatment. And now after the fourth time, the standard pain is already gone in my right shoulder.
How has the treatment affected your daily life? Can you do things that were too painful before?
I am still going to physiotherapy and I have honestly told them that I was doing acupuncture. She has no experience with acupuncture but found it very interesting right away. When we started doing the exercises, she said, 'Huh? It was completely stuck on the left side. But you are already making a lot of progress!' That was quite a revelation for her. So, I can probably start with movement therapy on the left side. And with the right side, I can now almost painlessly put the cups on the top shelf.
Your physiotherapist is open to acupuncture. What do you think of the collaboration between acupuncture and other medical or therapeutic treatments?
I should actually still go to the doctor to have an echo made on the right side, plus an injection. But that's no longer necessary. So of course I'm not going to do that. I have a new doctor and don't know her very well yet, but if I tell her that I have done acupuncture, she will be okay with that.
How would you describe your acupuncturist's approach?
I immediately felt understood and thought: okay, I'm in the right place. I felt that she knew what she was talking about. She tells exactly what she is going to do. For example, last time I had some aftereffects after the treatment, but she responded to that immediately and because of that, I kept having all the confidence. The next day it was a lot better. Esther is great!
I also told her: when all of this is done, I will just keep coming for maintenance. Also for other things. So for people who don't like it, I would like to say: you just have to do it. I say that to everyone by the way: my son, my colleagues...
At the moment, I walk a lot with the dog and I walk around swinging again. When my shoulders are completely unlocked, I might go to the gym with my daughter. Plenty of plans!
