Een kwestie van beweging
Week van de acupunctuur

Shortly after the pregnancies of my children, I started experiencing fatigue and muscle pain complaints; vague complaints that I didn't pay attention to during my busy work. I always just kept going. Until I crashed after a gastrointestinal infection. At first, I struggled with it myself for a while, had various blood and stool tests done which didn't show anything unusual. Eventually, the general practitioner referred me to a rheumatologist and a gastroenterologist, and an autoimmune disease was eventually diagnosed by the rheumatologist.
Time and attention
From that time on, I started practicing self-care. There was no therapy available for the autoimmune disease within conventional medicine, and I had to learn to live with it. I - at the age of 42 - couldn't easily accept this. With Tai Chi and vitamins/supplements, things went fairly well for a number of years. That slowly changed when I started getting migraines.
Initially, it was a few attacks per month and I could manage it fairly well with migraine medication. In the last two years, the symptoms eventually became so severe that I could hardly function anymore. That was the moment I went to an acupuncturist. During the intake, she mainly listened to me, tried to get an idea of the complaints (when it started and how it developed). Then she felt my pulse and checked my tongue. The fact that she took extensive time to listen to me, that time and attention, was already healing.
Second opinion
Through regular treatments, things gradually improved. Acupuncture gradually brought me more into balance, combined with a number of adjustments to my lifestyle. The combination of good conversations and needles worked well.
However, the migraine symptoms were quite stubborn and - partly because of my autoimmune disease - my acupuncturist eventually referred me for a second opinion to a colleague acupuncturist. She also helped me very well.
Suggestions
Acupuncture means attention, thoroughness, trust to me. It was nice that someone said to me: 'it will be okay'. That gave me back confidence in my own body.
My acupuncturists often hold up a mirror to me. With the combination of acupuncture and coaching, they have put me back on track. What I also find very beautiful is that they don't tell me what to do. They offer suggestions and then it's up to me whether or not to do something with it. That works much better.
Many complaints and ailments go away on their own, but if you get stuck with complaints and can't make progress, an acupuncturist can help tremendously to bring you back into balance.
It is of course very important to have trust in the acupuncturist, but the same goes for conventional care. Acupuncture has given a boost to my self-healing ability.
