Acupuncturist, a free profession
In the Netherlands the regular medical professions (such as MD, physiotherapist, pharmacist, dentist, nurse etc.) are regulated by a law named BIG, (Beroepen Individuele Gezondheidszorg = professions individual healthcare).
The profession of acupuncturist however is a so called 'free profession', which means that anyone can claim to be an acupuncturist and treat patients.
Most patients want their treatment to be reimbursed by their health insurance. In the Netherlands, health insurance companies only reimburse treatments by acupuncturists who are a member of a professional association like the NVA.
To be reimbursed, an additional insurance package on top of the basic one is required as well.
Basic medical education (MBK)
As of 1 January 2012, if a therapist is not registered as a BIG therapist, some health insurance companies require the therapist to have followed MBK (basic medical education. This specific training must be accredited by CPION.
This training is also available in English.
