Koos Ligthart
Why did you choose to become an acupuncturist? What or who inspired you?
I chose to become an acupuncturist because during the classes in the physiotherapy program, I was always amazed by the teacher who was an acupuncturist. He often made logical connections between human behavior, emotions, work, food, illness, and health. He introduced us to the holistic perspective of TCM. You see the person as a whole, with and in their environment.

What is your most beautiful experience with a patient?
My most beautiful experiences are often with people who have been treated in conventional medicine. They were told there: 'I'm sorry, I can't do anything more for you' or 'You will have to learn to live with it'. These people no longer feel taken seriously and are left out in the cold. Eventually, they come to me. After an intake interview, I can often help them and offer them a solution. They are often surprised. But also overjoyed because their complaint is heard and a solution is offered in TCM.
What still surprises you in your profession?
What surprises me is that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is thousands of years old and still continues to evolve, building on its foundation. You never stop learning. There are constantly new insights and methods emerging. And that continues to inspire me.
Is there something in your practice that embodies the essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine for you?
For me, that is the Buddha. He is the symbol of peace, wisdom, and contentment. The symbol of being in total harmony and balance with oneself and one's surroundings.
