Acupuncture effective on many points

Find an acupuncturist

Koos van Kooten

Why did you choose to become an acupuncturist? What or who inspired you?

By the time I was almost a doctor, I knew I wanted to find a way of working that is good for the whole person, that provides a connection for what we usually call body, mind, and soul. Through family, I came into contact with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and realized almost immediately that this system offered the possibilities I was looking for. Over the years, teachers who place the connection between body, mind, and soul at the center of their own work have inspired me - both within and outside of Chinese medicine. In the end, I chose Five Elements Acupuncture according to Worsley, the system that, for me, allows the most direct connection between human experience and acupuncture treatment.

What is your most beautiful experience with a patient?

My most beautiful experience with a patient? In the past, I could probably have named a few, but now when I think of this question, I immediately think of the consultations from today and yesterday. Almost every consultation is a beautiful experience with a patient, if I allow myself to tune in to what is needed, if the patient allows themselves to tune in to what is needed, and if we can make contact about it. A 'beautiful' experience doesn't necessarily mean a 'pleasant' experience, it's the connection that can make every encounter meaningful. Especially when what was hidden comes (back) to light, the 'most beautiful' moments of wonder arise.

What still amazes you in your profession?

I am still amazed - or actually more and more! - by the enormous possibilities that we as humans have to develop ourselves during our lives. About how illness, suffering, and adversity offer us the opportunities to relate to reality as it is - precisely because in adversity we encounter ourselves the most. And about how people can choose to live instead of just survive. I think it's amazing that I get to be a part of that (also) in my work every day in such an intensive way and contribute to it. And I still find it miraculous how an ancient healing method like acupuncture can support and stimulate change with something as tiny as a few needles in well-chosen spots.

Is there something in your practice that embodies the essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine for you?

This is the place where I sit during the discussion part of a consultation with my patient. Together, we explore what is important today, what questions are arising, what has changed, and what wants to change. By focusing our attention, the path often becomes clearer. For me, this encounter helps tailor acupuncture to what is needed today. But the encounter itself is also a crucial part of the healing process. It often helps the patient reflect on what is important in the time after the consultation and to do what is right for them. For me, this place symbolizes the meeting and collaboration.
